Neato! I was featured in an interview with my library’s *Match Makers!*

Better Know a Library Staffer: Cassandra

http://blog.heightslibrary.org/better-know-a-library-staffer-cassandra/

Here on the blog the other Matchmakers and I share what we are reading, watching, or listening to quite frequently, but we don’t often hear from our other staff members all over the library system. Now, we will be sharing interviews from other staff members so that you the reader can see what we’re reading/watching/listening to all over the Heights Library system!

This interview comes from Youth Services Associate Cassandra!

Read

What book are you reading at the moment? What are your thoughts on it?

Ivy Pocket is so sassy and clever! A Darkly whimsical and wickedly funny tale about a twelve-year-old maid who finds herself at the very heart of a conspiracy involving mischief, ghosts, and intrigue. This is the second book of her spooky adventure. This juvenile fiction series that has had me literally laughing out loud and swooning over the illustrations simultaneously. I’m really enjoying it!

What kind of books do you typically read?

Tons of Non Fiction about things that interest me. Various aspects of arts development, monsters and movie magic, tiki culture, vintage fashion, diy projects, oddities and the occult, healthy living and eating, things about the earth, self improvement, etc Within my one year of working at the library, I have dived deep back into the world of Fiction. It used to take me FOREVER to read a book cover to cover. Lately I can hardly put anything down! I’m mostly into Horror, Science Fiction, and anything with whimsical or magical elements. etc.

Lately, the Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children Series by Ransom Riggs has really resonated with me. Anything reminiscent of Lovecraft, Tolkien, or Gaiman usually draws me in instantly. Sometimes I’ll pick up really weird, dark, graphic novels as well. I recently liked The Black’mor Chronicles a lot.

Since I am in Youth Services, I obviously read a lot of picture books and juvenile fiction. Being so influenced by macabre and unusual, I have an amazing list of spooky titles that I’ve liked and have given out countless recommendations. One of my favorite parts about picture books is the artwork and illustrations. I love anything Gris Grimly has done. In general though, I am a sucker for a good story.

Have you ever pretended to have read a book? If so, which one and why?

It drives me crazy when people pretend to do anything! I have never done this. If I’m not digging a book, I will just stop reading it. Latest example of something that I had to stop reading was The Night Circus, I’m not sure what all the hype was about!

Watch

Which do you prefer: movies or television?

Having a background in Special Effects, movies were my first love and always will be. There a lot of really great shows out there that have gotten my attention though. It depends on what I’m in the mood for. I also watch a lot of documentaries based on things I’m interested in.

Have you ever binge-watched a show? If so, what was it?

Of course I have. Most recently Penny Dreadful, Vikings, & The Knick.

Listen

What kind of music do you enjoy?

Rockabilly, Surf, 60’s Garage, Post Punk, New Wave, Deathrock, Doom Metal, Southern Gothic Americana, 50’s revival, etc etc etc.

Have you found any new or new-to-you artists/bands lately?

index

I recently got a cool compilation from the library called *Halloween Nuggets – Monster 60’s a go go * It’s hours of 60’s Horror Themed Garage Rock- it was awesome!

Other bands I’ve been into lately include Windhand, Messer Chups, The Sterling Sisters, and Hola Ghost, just to name a few.

Do you listen to different music based on the seasons?

Seasons hardly effect my music preferences for me personally. It really depends on what I’m in the mood for or more importantly, what I’m doing. When I’m reading, I listen to really chill medieval neofolk type stuff. But if I’m crafting, I listen to loud doom metal or something upbeat that I can sing along to.

Anything else you’d like to add?

This is a great idea to feature interviews with staff members. I am honored to have participated 🙂

Thanks Cassandra!
